about

Nick and I wrote this song on a cold October afternoon in Dublin with songwriter Anna Krantz. As with many song-writing sessions, we starting off as strangers and within 10 minutes we’d told each other everything there is to know. This song is about trying and struggling to have children and the pressures that society puts on us to have a family. But it’s also a song for anyone who struggles with their physical or mental health and is frustrated with people offering solutions. We’re all going through something and if we’re not quite where we want to be in life it’s not for lack of trying.

lyrics

Lately I’ve been in a battle with my body
It’s not doing what I want it to do
Lately I’m getting the feeling that nobody
Understands what I’m going through

People think
What they say
Is empathy
But fail to notice
That pity leaves bruises

What gives you the right
Right to decide
My stage of life?
It’s none of your business
I don’t have the choice you have
Do you ever think about that?
The truth is
It’s for no lack of trying, trying trying
Trying, trying trying

Everyday is getting harder to remember
Who I was before I knew what I know
Yeah the plans I had ain’t easy to surrender
But freedom lies in letting them go

When time complains
Minds can change
And that’s ok
The less that you listen
The more that you’re missing

What gives you the right
Right to decide
My stage of life?
It’s none of your business
I don’t have the choice you have
Do you ever think about that?
The truth is
It’s for no lack of trying, trying trying
Trying, trying trying
Trying, trying, trying
Trying, trying, trying

Just ‘cause you got opinions
Don’t mean we need to hear them

What gives you the right
Right to decide
My stage of life?
I don’t have the choice you have
Do you ever think about that?

What gives you the right
Right to decide
My stage of life?
It’s none of your business
I don’t have the choice you have
Do you ever think about that?
The truth is
It’s for no lack of trying, trying trying
Trying, trying trying
Everyone’s trying, trying, trying
And believe me I’m trying

Now you know when you see me you know I’m trying
Now you know when you see me you know I’m trying
